Our Mission
The Pacific Islands Fisheries Group’s (PIFG) mission is to perpetuate Pacific Island culture, tradition and heritage through awareness and active engagement in the responsible management and conservation of our island fishery resources
Fisheries Development
Pacific Islanders have for centuries relied on the ocean to sustain its populations and have thus integrated the ocean’s bounties in our traditional practices and cultural heritage. As we struggle to be self reliant, there are many under-utilized fishery resources to be explored. PIFG works with fishermen, NGOs, and agencies to support fishery development projects explore new fisheries, develop seafood markets and create new jobs.
Cooperative Fisheries Research
PIFG believes fishermen must be part of the solution when monitoring, managing or conducting research on our local fisheries. Through grants and contracts, PIFG facilitates the involvement of commercial and recreational fishermen in the collection of fundamental scientific fisheries information to support sound resource conservation and management.
Lawai’a Magazine
“To perpetuate our fishing tradition and lifestyle” Lawai’a Magazine showcases Hawaii’s fishermen, working fishing, marine and seafood communities and local seafood through stories written by fishermen. Lawai’a promotes positive aspects and perpetuates our fishing traditions and lifestyle. Lawai’a’s talk story type articles are fun and easy to read while conveying pertinent and often timely information about our natural resources.
Tag-It
Our ”One Stop, Tag Shop” Tag-It program streamlines requests for tags & tag kits, data collection and tag recovery monitoring. The data is used by scientists to improve understanding of important fisheries in order to afford the best informed management decisions possible. Tagging is supported throughout Hawaii and US Pacific, including Guam and Saipan. Tagging is done with partnerships with fishermen, the fishing community and government agencies.
Keiki Fishing
We work with the Boy Scouts, Schools, Fishing Clubs, Boys and Girls Clubs and other community organization to host kids fishing days at local beaches, reservoirs and fish ponds to introduce kids to the joy of fishing. We encourage kids to take the PIFG Pledge to take personal responsibility to support responsible use of our ocean resources. For additional keiki fishing resources from the state, click here.
