Documenting our Fishing and Seafood Heritage to Promote Sustainable Fisheries
Supporting Island Fisheries and Communities
Fishing Heritage
Early immigration of foreign labor to support plantations also brought new fishing techniques and technology to the Hawaiian islands. The sanpan (Japanese fishing boat) changed the landscape of Hawaii’s fisheries and seafood industry to what we now have today. Documenting our fishing practices, traditions and culture for future generations is an important part of our mission..
Fishery Development
PIFG supports projects across the Pacific Islands that promote sustainable fisheries, explores new opportunities and shares information about our cultural and traditional fishing history. Passing on fishery knowledge and fishing practices to the next generation helps to sustain our fishing heritage into the future and ensure equity and long-term perpetuation of Pacific Island Culture.
Seafood Promotion
As remote islanders in the middle of the north Pacific Ocean, we’ve relied on the sea for food, transportation, and recreation. A melting pot of ethnicities, cultures and practices have evolved into the world renown pacific rim cuisine we have today. PIFG supports projects that promote our island’s fresh, wholesome, sustainable seafood and educates the community about its importance.
